ACTION ALERT

Governor's Budget Unfair to Catholic Schools
March 1, 2011.  BUDGET CUTS UNFAIR TO CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

Governor Cuomo's proposed budget treats public schools far better than it treats religious and independent schools.

Catholic schools will receive less money and services compared to the public schools:

  • Budget cuts for education make up a greater percent in the Catholic and non-public school sector.
  • They have yet to be reimbursed for over $250 million for mandated services dating back to 2002 while public schools will be awarded $500 million of new funding for academic and administrative improvements.
  • In addition, public schools are getting $70 million in reimbursement for the MTA payroll tax while our schools receive nothing.
WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Parents and friends of Catholic education are urged to email or write to their elected officials and ask for equitable treatment

The particulars of the issues and corresponding legislation are on the Catholic Advocacy Network site.  The site is easy to navigate and even easier to make your voices heard!
  • All Albertus Magnus parents are asked to register at the Catholic Advocacy Network site.  There is also a follow-up alert on Catholic school funding that requires your immediate help.
  • While there, fill in the form and email it to the governor and your legislators all in one stroke.  (Your address and zip code are used to identify the appropriate representative.)
  • You could also fill in the form and download it to print and send via U.S. mail.
If you prefer, you may download action letters in a zip file to print, sign, and send.  The network site lists elected officials by zip code.

Thank you for being an active member of the Catholic Advocacy Network.

A FEW SECONDS OF YOUR TIME CAN HAVE A LASTING IMPACT!
