Mock Trial

The mock trial is designed to introduce students to our legal system by providing a challenging, academic competition. The program offers students the opportunity for personal growth and achievement, emphasizing the importance of research, presentation, and teamwork. It also teaches students about contemporary public issues and the legal system and encourages teachers and students to develop learning partnerships with professionals from the community.  Lawyers from our community contribute their time as coaches; actual judges and courtroom personnel preside over the trials in courtrooms in Rockland County.

Albertus Magnus has an active Mock Trial team that argues the current mock trial case on both sides - plaintiff and defense.  They prepare opening and closing statements, and questions for direct and cross examination of witnesses.  Three "lawyers" try the case on each side complete with a group of "witnesses" who give testimony to bolster their case.  Albertus Magnus students won the County Championships in 2007; they went to the finals last year.

If a student is interested in law and the legal process and/or enjoys acting, Mock Trial is the perfect opportunity to explore both!

Chris Power, social studies teacher, has been the moderator for 7 years.  Ken Zemsky, an attorney and CPA as well as an Albertus Magnus alumnus and parent joined the Mock Trial team this year as coach.

Mock Trial Team Wins First Competition of the 2012 Season
The Albertus Magnus Mock Trial Team competed in their first 2012 competition against opponents from Spring Valley High School.  The three "lawyers" for the prosecution,
Hailey Hoffman, Kristen Sullivan, and Kiera Townsend successfully argued a difficult case - one that hinges much on circumstantial evidence.  Testimony from the Falcon's three "witnesses" -Giselle Rodriguez, Matt Brenner, and Conor Horan - bolstered the prosecution's arguments and helped the team in their win. The case took place at the Clarkstown Justice Court on Wednesday, February 29, 2012.  Sr. Renee, and Mr. Power were in attendance as well as team members and parents.
