Albertus Community Mourns the Loss of Beloved Teacher
On Monday, May 22, beloved Theology teacher and sports announcer Joe McKenna passed away after a month-long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Sadly, Joe was planning to retire at the end of this year after 40 years of teaching theology, the last 10 of which were at Albertus Magnus. In addition to teaching, Joe announced games for many of the teams including soccer, football, basketball and more. He was the perennial winner of "Most School Spirit" in the yearbook faculty superlatives, voted on by Albertus Seniors. He was the moderator for the mock trial team and the after-school movie club and could always be seen at games, concerts, plays, and other school activities. He was famous for starting his classes with a joke of the day, greeting everyone in the halls by name, and inviting everyone to morning prayer in the chapel. His big smile and joyful enthusiasm were a staple on campus and his motto for students leaves an indelible print of Catholicism on students and faculty alike; "Before you speak ask yourself... Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind?" He lived this daily as his speech was dominated by thanking and praising everyone around him. He was in love with putting a smile on every student's face. His presence will be sorely missed.
