Albertus Students Design Sustainable Redevelopment in Rockland County
On March 26, the RCC Environmental Pollution class attended the Rockland PLUS (Planning Land Use with Students) virtual symposium where they presented their Google Earth projects on the sustainable redevelopment of Schimpf Farm located down the road from Albertus Magnus High School. Over the course of the third quarter, the students created a redevelopment plan to revitalize Schimpf Farm in West Nyack. They focused on more sustainable and climate smart options by increasing efficiency in transportation, water and energy.
Rockland PLUS is a unique program that prepares and inspires youth to address the tremendous challenge of protecting our natural resources while providing for healthy, sustainable communities. The program is a collaborative partnership of Columbia University- Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, Keep Rockland Beautiful, Rockland Conservation & Service Corps, Rockland County Office of Economic Development & Tourism, and Rockland County Soil & Water Conservation District.
The students participated in three workshops with various Rockland PLUS members where they learned more about sustainability, resilience, developing site design and focusing on local community features and needs. They engaged in a variety of online resources promoting creativity and collaboration. This was followed by a project phase where the students executed their redevelopment plans of Schimpf Farm using the Google Earth platform.
In the first part of the symposium, the students presented their projects and received direct feedback from RPLUS facilitators, Kim Burgos (Coordinator, Rockland Conservation and Service Corps) and Sonia Cairo (Executive Director, Keep Rockland Beautiful) as well as community mentors Tony Lisanti (Managing Director, Integral Building and Design, Inc.) and Suzanne Barclay (Executive Director, Cornell Cooperative Extension). Afterwards, students used their newly honed skills and collaborated with facilitators and mentors to plan the redevelopment of the Chair Factory site located on the Haverstraw waterfront.
