The 1990 Girls Soccer team created history by being the First Albertus Girls Soccer team to win a New York State Soccer Regional Championship and attend the New York State Final Four, while also winning a League and Sectional title. This outstanding group of all-around athletes not only achieved on the field but were outstanding Student-Athletes that included 18 players on the Honor Roll.
The season started with a tight 3-2 loss to Nationally ranked North Rockland at Germonds Park, but the group responded with 19 wins in the next 20 games (a tie sandwiched vs North Rockland). The Lady Falcons would go undefeated in the League outscoring opponents 43-5. The Lady Falcons would give up less than a goal during a regular season and ended the season 15-1-1 allowing only 15 goals while scoring 65. The Lady Falcons were dominant all season long, led by a strong group of defenders, Helene Herlihy in goal, Jamie McCullough, Collette Haugh, Kathie Smith, and Kim Gregory, while the midfield was anchored by Rockland County Player of the Year Karen Gallagher, Tara Cassidy and Jennifer Drum (AM HOF Softball), and strikers Maureen Moran, Margaret Feerick and Kelly Gavan. The balance of the team is what truly made this team dominant, defenders Suzanne Clarke and Noreen White were brilliant substitutes, Catie Leahy, Monica Crane, Lorraine O’Neil and Colleen Gavan gave us great depth in midfield. The Lady Falcons had 13 different goal scorers during the season and 15 different players having at least a point with Kelly Gavan and Margaret Feerick being our leading scorers. Albertus girls’ soccer dominated the 1990 Sectional playoffs by outscoring opponents 8-1 and winning the third Sectional Title in program history.
In the first round of the New York State Regional tournament the Falcons would face the team they lost to the previous year in the Regionals, Maine Endwell who was ranked 2cd in the State class B at the time. The Falcons would defeat Maine Endwell behind a Margaret Feerick goal 1-0 at SUNY Binghamton (Section 4) and move to the Regional Final. The Regional Final would be played in Middletown, and the Falcons would play from Section 9 Minisink Valley. In a true battle at Middletown High school the girls would defeat Minisink 1-0 on a Jamie McCullough 25-yard blast late in the second half. This victory was the first New York State Regional title won by a girls’ soccer team at Albertus!
A truly successful season filled with some breakthroughs!
